Module Overview

Series 5 is the second iteration of the program, and the curriculum will continue to evolve and improve over time, based on member feedback.

Module 1: Song Ideation

You begin by defining the core idea of your track, its mood and creative intent.

- Research and Inspiration
- Choosing a concept or theme
- Setting creative constraints
- Creating an idea using samples
- Sample manipulation - Part 1.

Module 2: Workspace Organisation

Next, you prepare your environment so it supports focus instead of friction.

- DAW Templates
- Sound and sample library preparation
- Sample management and auditioning
- Sample manipulation - Part 2.

Module 3: Drums

With direction in place, you build the rhythmic foundation of the track.

- Choosing the right drums
- Kick and snare design
- Percussion
- Using loops and breaks
- Drum programming
- Drum processing.

Module 4: Adding Supporting Elements

You then add musical elements that give the track movement, atmosphere, and depth.

- Using MIDI instruments to create supporting elements
- Exploring melody and chords
- Atmospheric pad and texture design that supports the core idea.

Module 5: Bass

At this point, you focus on the relationship between bass and drums.

- Choosing or designing the right bass sound
- Writing a bassline
- Sub bass processing
- Mid bass layering
- Bass sound design
- Bass bus processing.

Module 6: Structure and Arrangement

With the core elements in place, you break out of the loop and start to sketch out the arrangement.

- Breaking out of a loop
- Defining sections
- Maintaining energy and interest
- Using contrast, dynamics and progression to guide the listener.

Module 7: Sound Design & Transitions

You then refine the track by designing atmospheres, transitions, and movement.

- Creating atmospherics and transition effects
- Using existing elements creatively to maintain cohesion.

Module 8: Mixdown

Once the track is fully arranged, you focus on clarity and balance.

- Gain staging and level balance
- Analysis tools
- Frequency masking
- Low-end control
- Frequency-dependent side-chaining
- EQ, compression, saturation, clipping, limiting, and stereo enhancement.

Module 9: Master Buss Processing & Translation

In the final technical stage, you prepare your track for release.

- Preparing a pre-master
- Mix buss processing
- Referencing
- Mix translation.

Module 10: Completion, Reflection & Next Steps

Finally, you close the loop.

- Sharing your track for feedback
- Reflecting on what has improved and what to refine next time
- Digital presence/brand awareness
- Social media marketing.
